Cosmetologists provide a variety of beauty services related to the care of the hair, scalp, skin, and nails. In constant contact with the public, cosmetologists provide not only an important service but derive a sense of satisfaction from their customers.

Beginning students receive instruction in manicuring, shampooing, hair cutting, finger waving, pincurl sets, and scalp treatment. Advanced students learn to give facial treatments, permanent waves, and to straighten, highlight, and tint hair. Students will also learn to style hair and perform makeup analysis. Related instruction covers the principles for sanitation, bacteriology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology as well as business and managerial concepts. Students have the opportunity to earn the 1000 hours of instruction necessary for Massachusetts licensure.

Most cosmetologists are employed in salons that are operated as independent establishments or in conjunction with hotels, department and specialty stores. After some experience, many cosmetologists open their own shops.
